Samsung Galaxy S5 Information and Review

The new Samsung Galaxy S5 is in stores now, and it comes packed with reasons to upgrade from your Galaxy S4. On Amazon, the 5.1-inch phone is going for around $189.99 when it’s bundled with a two-year contract, and $699.99 without a contract. You can find it for a bit less on eBay, with “Buy It Now” prices ranging as low as $629.99 (don’t forget to check the shipping charges and watch out for customs fees!).

Front and back Galaxy S5The Galaxy S5 runs the Android 4.4 KitKat operating system on a 2.5GHz quad-core processor with 2GB of RAM and 16/32GB of memory (you can add up to 128GB with microSD). Overall, its screen feels more vibrant, and its responsiveness feels a bit more snappy that than of its predecessor.

Samsung says the S5 "offers the most advanced LTE experience and Wi-Fi performance available today, ensuring  fast data speeds for unrivaled media consumption and productivity".

Camera Galaxy S5The 16-megapixel camera has excellent, continuous autofocus, which makes for some spectacular selfies. It’s also capable of capturing beautiful 1080p HD video. Novel new hardware and software features also include the security enhancing fingerprint scanner and the improved S Health app, which works with a built-in heart-rate monitor on the rear of the phone.

The overall look of the phone hasn’t changed much from the Galaxy S4, with a rounded rectangle shape and just a small modification to the central home button. Instead of the fingerprint-prone back of its predecessor, the rear of the Galaxy S5 is covered with tiny, matte dimples. The size of the phone is about the same, too. It’s only very slightly taller and heavier than the Galaxy S4.

On the bottom of the phone, the USB housing has been upgraded to feature a full-sized USB 3.0 port that’s backward-compatible with regular micro-USB inputs. This means that all of your old chargers will work, but you have the option of charging faster with the supplied USB 3.0 cable.

The Galaxy S5 meets all of the IP67 standards for water- and dust-resistance. There’s a rubber gasket just inside the back cover, and you may notice that your cover fits a bit more securely. You can drop your phone in up to 3 feet of water and it will stay good for up to 30 minutes.

Samsung’s TouchWiz interface does a great job of expanding the capabilities of the KitKat OS. You’ll never be far from an onscreen menu button, and a Google search box is ready and waiting for voice activation on the home screen.

Interestingly, Samsung is including some fitness tools with the S5.  The phone offers a comprehensive personal fitness tracker to help users monitor and manage their behavior, along with additional tools including a pedometer, diet and exercise records, and a new, built-in heart rate monitor. Galaxy S5 users can further customize their experience with an enriched third party app ecosystem and the ability to pair with next generation Gear products for real-time fitness coaching.

Other new features include the Kid’s Mode, which is a downloading 58MB module that serves as a sandbox for your phone. Here, kids can play with the camera and other approved apps without the potential for messing with any other, more important areas of the phone. There’s also a new ultra power-saving mode that dramatically increases your battery life during those times that you left the charger at home.

Overall, the Samsung Galaxy S5 isn’t making any dramatic breakthroughs, but why take chances when you’ve already got a good thing going? It adds just enough improvements to make the upgrade feel like an actual upgrade, and when you’re talking about upgrading a phone that’s already good enough to go head-to-head with the iPhone, that’s plenty.

Best Budget Smartphone: Our Pick

The best budget smartphone is the solution to people who need a great quality smartphone but on a budget. Smartphones continually prove to be beneficial in our daily lives but finding one to do what you need it to do for you at a reasonable price is the most important thing to consider. The hottest, top budget smartphone is the Sony Xperia U.

This phone symbolizes class, style and intricacy.  Right from the outset, this phone makes a statement of performance and simplicity.

The sleek, attractive yet simple Xperia U greets you with a dazzling 3.5 inch display that is bright and high definition. The scratchproof display complements the brilliant display. Its 8 GB internal memory and 512 MB RAM make it a high performance phone. When it comes to processing power, the 1-gigahertz A-9 cortex processor makes it fast and excellent to operate. You do not need to worry about the phone hanging or applications crushing because of a low processor. These features are certainly outstanding for a budget smartphone. This phone is the combination of ultimate capability and capacity.

The 5-megapixel camera is excellent for those high quality pictures. In addition, a front facing camera enables you to carry out functions like video calling.   If you want to shoot high definition videos, this is the phone to have. You can shoot up to 720p HD videos. The phone comes with the android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system. You can upgrade the system to 4.0 with the Bravia Engine. This brilliant phone enables you to enjoy great features and make the most out of your phone. You can personalize it to fit your needs and preferences.

It is very easy to use and the interface makes the work much easier. The strip on the phone light up in different colors. This gives you a pleasant experience as well a touch of style. This phone is indeed the best choice for anyone looking to enjoy a great quality phone for the right investment. Amazon offers this phone at great prices, delivered to your house and don’t overlook eBay listings for the Experia either, especially for accessories.   In our opinion, this is the best budget smartphone in the market that isn’t cheap but gives you real value for money.

5 Hottest New Smartphones

The smartphone business is booming, and the best ones we've seen will have been released by early 2013. Manufacturers are finally shifting their focus to building quality products. So, which smartphones could be huge hits, convincing consumers to trade in their old device for one of the five hottest new smartphones?

  • The Apple iPhone 5 promises to bring the same incredibly fast data-connectivity technology as the iPad. It will also possess 200 new features and Apple’s new operating software, the iOS 6. Consumers will love the speed, the new larger display, the faster processor, and the upgraded FaceTime camera. The Apple iPhone 5 is all but certain to be yet another improvement to the iPhone family.  Apple has been busy partnering with big box stores to move out its iPhone 4, still among the biggest technological hits of the cell phone era.
  • Nokia and Windows planned an event in which many anticipate the official unveiling of the new Nokia Lumina Phi smartphone. This phone will also feature the data connectivity software 4G LTE and a 4.65-inch display. Consumers will enjoy the high-resolution camera, speed, microSD memory card slot, large display screen, and windows capabilities. The joint collaboration of Nokia and Windows could prove to be a powerful force in the coming months and years.
  • The announcement of the Droid RAZR HD by Motorola has many people eager to jump on board the latest version of this popular phone. This model will feature the 4G LTE technology and offer many upgraded features from its predecessor.  It will offer a 4.6-inch display with a pixel screen count of 720 and an 8MP camera. Not only do these improvements appeal to smartphone enthusiasts, the Kevlar backing provides provide the ultimate protection for those individuals who are not gentle phone owners.
  • The Sony Xperia Ion has debuted. It also features the 4G LTE software, as well as a 4.6-inch display. In addition, the Xperia Ion also includes a TV launcher HDMI-out, a 12MP camera, and it is compatible with a dock to provide you with the option to hook it up to your television to view photos, play music, or even send texts. This phone will appeal to the gamer, as they will even be able to use the phone to play their favorite Playstation games.
  • Consumers continue to respond positively to Samsung smartphones over the iPhone; from the underrated Stratosphere to the Samsung Galaxy Note 2, which  features a massive 5.5-inche display, Bluetooth 4.0, and a larger battery to improve upon the previous version. Just like the others, it features the 4G LTE software and is one of the most anticipated releases of the year.

Smartphones continue to evolve and improve. The top 5 smartphones will continue to amaze the consumer as manufactures seek to push the limits. As the holidays approach, brace yourself for a heated competition as each company attempts to capture the majority of the market share. It is a good time to be a smartphone consumer.

Latest Smartphones, Regular Cellphones Pushing World Change

The latest smartphones are for more than just keeping in touch with friends.  In fact, the cellphones are becoming a very important tool of change around the world.

Young people using text and voice features on their mobile devices are actually pushing global change—even revolution--because of their immediacy and capability to connect people in far away places.

Michael Hanley, journalism professor and director of Ball State University’s Institute for Mobile Media Research says the cellphones have been used to plan and report on the spring uprisings in many Arab nations as well as protests in London, England and other countries.

"Texting by youth has made the cellphone the perfect communication device for protests and revolts," Hanley says. "In many parts of the world, the cellphone is the main form of mass communication, especially with youth. And as smartphone adoption grows, the ability to take photos and video with a smartphone and send instantly around the world makes mobile devices the new tool of social transformation."

There are a number of differences in how college students and other young people utilize mobile devices, which has an impact on their ability to use cellphones during protest situations.

"In the U.S., for example, we have one of the highest penetrations of Internet access via mobile devices. Most countries in Europe and the Middle East have primarily text- and voice-based cellular systems. So how the devices are used in the street differs by country and cellular provider."

Over the last five years, Hanley has been researching college students’ use of mobile communication devices including the latest smartphones, discovering trends in how they are used and finding a huge spike by young Americans during since the mid-2000s.

Pay as you go Smartphones. Are They any Good?

When you look for a new smartphone there are a couple of common ways of doing it.

The first one is to pay for it on a monthly contract. This is where you pay a fee each month for the plan that most suits your needs. The other approach is to take it on a pay as you go deal. With this type of arrangement you pay for it as you spend the credit. These are the main points to bear in mind:

1. Freedom to cancel when you want to. The big drawback for a lot of people when they look at contracts for smartphones is that you are tied into the deal for a relatively long period of time. This means that you are stuck on the same plan even if it no longer suits you in the future. With a pay as you go smartphone you can change phones or networks really easily. This is the ideal way of doing things if you don’t want to tie yourself down to something or if you aren’t sure what your future plans are going to be.

2. Top up the credit as you need it. There may be some months in which you don’t use the phone at all and others in which you use it a lot. With a contract plan you get charged the same basic cost every month, whereas a pay as you go deal allows you to spend what you need when you need it. This makes it a good choice if you are an erratic phone user who doesn’t always use it in the same way every month.

3. Higher initial cost. There is no doubt that buying a pay as you go smartphone will cost you more at the outset. Monthly plans often give great phones as part of the deal either cheaply or even free. This is because the company knows that they are getting regular payments from you for a long time. With a pay as you go phone you can expect to pay a higher initial fee for the handset.

4. Periods when you don’t use it much. You may go fairly long without having to use your smartphone, and it seems a shame to keep on paying every month while it is gathering dust. This is where having a pay as you go option can save you money; as you simply stop topping it up while you aren’t using it. There will normally be a cut off period, at which point your credit needs to be used or you will lose it, however this is always a fairly long time from when you last charged the phone.

Whatever option you choose, the main issue is to find both a phone and a method of payment that is suitable. It pays to shop around and find a deal that is going to meet all aspects of your requirements, rather than regret having bought it hastily at some point in the future.

I Can Barely Run a Computer. How Can I Operate a Smartphone?

If you read the specifications for modern smartphones and all that they pack into them you could be forgiven for thinking that they are hugely complicated machines to operate. Anyone looking to update their old cell phone may be put off simply by the thought that operating a smartphone must surely be at least as complicated as running a computer, and probably more so due to its small size.

In fact, this is not the case for a number of reasons that we will look at here. Smartphones are incredibly easy to use and you will probably be able to master your new phone very quickly indeed. Even if you haven’t yet got the hang of your PC you might like to have a look at these facts and decide for yourself whether you want to have a go at using the latest generation of mobile phones.

User friendly interface. Touch screens models let you simply press the part of the screen you are interested in and it will take you automatically to the area you want to go to without any fuss at all. Everything is named as you would expect it to be and there are no bizarre codes or technical names cluttering up the screens. This intuitive approach means that anyone can pick up a smartphone and get started using it and navigating from screen to screen right away instead of having to read a hefty user manual.

On screen keyboard. If you prefer to use a keyboard then an onscreen one will pop up at your command and let you use a more traditional input method.

Support network. These phones are so popular nowadays that you will find plenty on online blogs, user manuals and forums giving advice to new users and discussing how to make the most of the features. If you have a specific question then you could look up the answer on the Internet. If you can’t find what you are looking for, then putting your query on a user forum will usually let you get really good answers from experts. Experienced users are generally only too happy to help out newcomers and will give you step by step instructions to make sure you understand what you need and how to do it.

Easier to use all the time. A lot of pieces of technology get more complicated as they incorporate more and more features. With smartphones it is actually the opposite that is true. As time goes by and they become more and more complex underneath, the operation is actually getting easier for the users. There are different types of operating systems around, with Android and the Apple iPhone versions as the most common and the most popular ones. Before choosing which phone you want to buy, it might be a good idea for you to try out a few and see which one is the easiest for you to operate. You will probably be surprised at how simple it is to operate a smartphone and how quickly you pick up the basics.

Types of Smartphones: What’s Out There?

When you look at buying a good cell phone, one of the first things you will notice is just how many types of smartphones are around. The incredible success of these little pocket computers means that new and improved ones are coming out all the time.

While this means that you have a huge amount of choices, it can also make picking one more difficult as the sheer variety can be enough to confuse anyone.

While they all start off from the basic idea of a cell phone with advanced features there are some other points that you need to take into account in order to make the right decision.

1. iPhone or Android?

These are the two most popular types of smartphones around. iPhone is made by Apple and had a big head start on the Android devices. It still has a much larger market share but Android is making headway into that. If you go for the iPhone there are various different releases available, each with enhancements on the older versions. The most current version is number 4, and each new release is greeted with a frenzy of excitement among smartphone enthusiasts. The Android business model is a bit different in that. It is an operating system owned by Google and other phone firms use it as the system for their own phones. This means that there are far more different phones running on this operating system than on the Apple one. The latest version is 2.3 and new phones on this version are starting to be released in early 2011.

script type="text/javascript">

2. The most up to date model?

As we have just seen, new versions and new phones are constantly being released, meaning that your choice is getting bigger all the time. If you choose the most up-to-date model you will obviously get all of the new features but will almost certainly have to pay more for it. Choosing a slightly older model will get you a less eye-catching model perhaps, but a better price and the knowledge that it is a phone that has been around for a while, and that has been tried out and tested by many people.

3. How big a screen do you want?

If you are going to be playing a lot of games or you have poor eyesight, then you will probably want to pick one with a really big display. Generally speaking, the difference between screen sizes is pretty small on paper but can make a big difference if you plan to use it a lot. The iPhone 4 for example, has 3.5 inch screen and the Samsung Galaxy model has a 4 inch screen. The HTC HD2 is the current model with the largest screen, at 4.3 inches.

4. How slim and lightweight does it have to be?

The difference between types of smartphones phones is, as with the screen size, minimal so for most people this really depends on whether you want a really cool, modern look more than any issues with portability or storage. In general terms the newer models offer a sleeker and slicker style.

Budget Smartphones – What’s Best?

Getting a really good smartphone on a tight budget involves a bit of shopping around and may involve you making a compromise or two on the features you were originally looking for. However, it is certainly not impossible, and getting budget smartphones for a good price is exactly what the following list is all about.

There are so many new models and updates coming out seemingly every day that models very quickly become obsolete in the eyes of those who only want the absolute latest model in their pocket. Of course, this is good news for those of us who would prefer to get a great phone that maybe lacks a feature or two but makes up for that with a stunning price and a tried and tested performance. All the prices quoted are for getting the phone on a contract.

  • Apple iPhone 3GS. This isn’t the most up-to-date iPhone but it is still a top quality phone that you can get a lot of use out of. The features aren’t quite as high as on the more modern iPhone 4 but there are still all the basic things that you would expect on any good smartphone. On a contract you can get this for between $50 and $100.
  • Samsung Intercept. Unlike the iPhone this is a model that runs on the Android operating system. It is an attractive looking machine that makes up for its lack of some of the more advanced smartphone features by coming at well under $100 on most contract deals. In fact, you might just get it free, which is an incredible offer for such a good phone.
  • HTC Droid Incredible. This is an Android powered machine that gives a fantastic 8 megapixel camera. The screen display is a shade smaller than some other models, but 3.7 inches is still pretty good size. You should be looking to pay less than $100 for this ever popular phone, as it has been replaced in the modernity stakes by some more up-to-date models.

  • T-Mobile myTouch 3G Slide. If you want a full, conventional keyboard input then this could be the one for you. The screen is reasonably if not spectacularly sized at 3.2 inches and all in all you get a great little phone for less than $50 these days.
  • HTC Wildfire. This is another smartphone that you should be able to get your hands on for under $100. It comes with a nice set of specifications such as the Android 2.1 system, a 5 megapixel camera and a 528 MHz processor. The screen is 3.2 inches and it has both GPS and Wi-Fi capability.
  • HTC Droid Eris. Here we have another HTC Android phone that shouldn’t cost you more than $100. It is nice and slim and has a reasonably sized touch screen that comes in at 3.2 inches. The camera is 5 megapixels and there all the basic features you would expect. The only really problem that users have reported with this one is a rather short battery life.

Best and Most Valuable Smartphone Accessories

Once you get your hands on a really good smartphone you will probably also want to find the best accessories to go with it. There are plenty of top options around and here we will look at the very best and most valuable smartphone accessories. While some of these are fairly expensive there are others that won’t cost much at all and can add a decent bit of value to your phone use.

  • Cases. They come in a wide variety of style and colors, so it is best to buy the smartphone first and then pick a case that suits it. The function of these accessories is to protect your smartphone from being damaged through bumps or falls. This means that choosing a sturdy case that looks like it could endure some accidental knocks is vital.
  • Storage options. If you are going to be using the phone as much as you expect, then you should be prepared to fill it with music, photos, videos and all sorts of other files. This makes it important that you get plenty of storage space lined up right from the very beginning. Instead of buying a 2GB card and then having to upgrade fairly quickly I would suggest simply buying the biggest card you can afford and keeping everything in it. A 16GB memory card can be bought for under $50.
  • Headphones. You can choose from a wide range of both wireless and cabled headphones for your phone. The Bluetooth ones in particular come in a wide variety of interesting colors, and some people like to choose a few different ones to let them vary their look from day to day. The traditional, cabled sets can come in at $10 to $20 while Bluetooth ones can cost you up to $100.
  • Cradle and charging station. These little devices make it really easy and convenient to charge and store your smartphone. You can pick this valuable smartphone accessory for under $10.
  • In car charger and holder. There are a wide variety of things you can buy to make it easier to use your smartphone while driving. A good holder with mount can cost $20 - $50 and a simple charger $10-$20. If you think that you are likely to be using your phone a lot while in your car, then buying the best one possible will keep you safe while you drive. The latest “connected car” systems, which are starting to appear on the market, are a lot more expensive than those mentioned but will you give things such as enhanced GPS facility, improved hands free functionality, and some also provide voice activated local business search and ticket booking options.
  • Cleaning and protecting options. Screen protectors and cloths for wiping your phone clean in a safe manner are nice, cheap products that will no doubt come in handy at some point. The screen protectors usually cost a little over $10 for a pack of three, and they help avoid scratches on the screen and also reduce glare. If you do occasionally drop your phone or aren't always as careful as you should be, this is also among the most valuable smartphone accessories, believe it or now.  Best of all, a pack of cloths should cost no more than $10.

Android vs. iPhone: What’s the Difference?

The two big players in the smartphone market are iPhone and Android. Let’s start off by having a little look at the history of these two and what they currently offer to someone looking for a smartphone.

The iPhone is offered by Apple and has been a sensation since it was first launched in 2007. It has now come out in several versions and the latest (the iPhone 4) generated as much expectation and excitement as the previous ones.

The Android system has been part of the Google group since 2005 and the first version was released in 2008. The system is used in a number of phones from different manufacturers.

Ok, that’s the background done so let’s have a look now at the main differences between iPhone and Android.

  • The phone. The big difference here is that the Android operating system comes on a lot of different phones. This means that you have a wider choice of models when it comes to choosing one. With the iPhone you are restricted to either the current model or any of the previous ones.
  • The features. The iPhone is widely regarded as being a great phone with outstanding features. The number of different phones running the various versions of Android makes it really difficult to do a straight comparison. If you are looking for a smartphone, then the best advice is to note down the features you want and check whether the iPhone and any of the Android devices match your needs.
  • The apps. There are the pieces of software that you can easily download onto your phone to run games, organize your documents, carry out your hobbies, etc. The general principal is the same for both types of machines but there are some differences in how they are implemented. The Android applications are developed by both Google and third party developers. There are currently believed to be over 200,000 Android apps on offer and many of them are free. iPhone apps are only available through the Apple App Store, and third party developers need to have their software approved by Apple before it gets put on there. There are currently over 300,000 apps on offers at the Apple store. Most users will find that both systems offer more than enough applications to keep them busy for a long time.
  • The carriers. The iPhone at present can only be used with the AT&T in the U.S., although long running rumors of other carriers getting involved should come to fruition in 2011. Android is currently supported by a number of carriers.
  • The popularity. The iPhone has undoubtedly got a far bigger market share at the moment, although Android is quickly eating up the distance between them. A lot of the public perception around the phones seems to be shaded by the fact that every new iPhone launch is seen as a huge event in the industry, while the large number of different smartphones running on Android make launches a lot more common place.
