Smartphones Comparison: A Look at What’s Out There

When you are looking for a smartphone it is easy to be confused with all the different names; Samsung, Verizon, Apple, Android, T-Mobile, etc.  Each offers something a little different.  Your smartphones comparison will be one of the most important things you do before taking the plunge into your first phone--or a new one.

In order to help, we have listed   a short description of some of the big  names you will come across:

  • Apple. This is a huge multinational corporation initially best known for the Apple Mac Computers. Their involvement in the smartphone market is strictly limited to the iPhone model. This is the pioneering smartphone that came out in 2007 and is still as popular as ever. They are now on the fourth version of the phone and each new model is as eagerly awaited as the last. To get more out of your iPhone you need to download software applications from Apple’s online App Store.
  • Android. This is the firm owned by Google and runs a rival operating system to the Apple one. It is generally seen as being a more open system, meaning that third party developers have more freedom in designing software for it. Unlike the Apple system, it is not limited to just one phone, and lots of manufacturers use the Android operation system on their phones. They are currently on the 2.3 version although the speed at which updates are released means that they will soon be on another one. Some people prefer the Apple / iPhone system and others prefer the Android system, so it is really just a question of seeing which one appeals to you. The iPhone is certainly the most successful smartphone at the present date, but then again, it had a head start, while Android powered devices are starting to catch up in terms of popularity.
  • Samsung, HTC, LG, Acer…. These are all handset manufacturers who offer phones that run the Android system. As stated above, the Apple software only runs on the iPhone, so none of these phones will use that firm’s operating system. The name on the phone is really just telling you who made it, not what operating system it uses. Different phones will have different specifications around the memory space, camera and similar, but they can, generally speaking, all use the same software apps on them.
  • Verizon, At&T, T-Mobile….These firms are the carriers. So that basically means that they are the ones who own the networks that let you make calls and surf the Internet. The network you choose will be the factor that decides the coverage you have and the price of your calls or monthly payment plan. The Apple iPhone has until now only been available in the U.S. on the AT&T network although rumors of a move onto another network have been around a long, long time. Android phones are available on a wider range of networks.

So, there are really three factors to take into account when making a smartphones comparison; operating system, handset manufacturer and network. If you are in the U.S. and want an iPhone, then all is straightforward as you need an Apple iPhone running on AT&T. For Android devices you can vary and choose the manufacturer and network provider that best suit you.
